Shary Ali

Hey everyone! My name is Shary Ali, and I am currently a senior at Chantilly. Throughout my high school career, I've taken my fair share of English electives: Journalism 2, 3, 4 and Creative Writing 1. Although I have always been passionate about reading and writing in English, over the years I have also acquired the ability to read and write in Arabic, a language I find equally intriguing. Here at the writing center, I am open to work with you on all forms of writing, but I especially love and specialize in English analysis essays and research papers. In my near future, I could potentially see myself studying English in College, alongside Environmental Science, but only time will tell. If I'm not tutoring with the Writing Center, you can find me tutoring at Math Honor Society, playing and coaching kids in basketball, reading a good book, working on my own writing pieces, or watching some good animes with my brothers. I'm excited to work with you all!

The best part of the Chantilly Writing Center is connecting writers with writers, having a space where students can converse with each other about the writing experience, and grow together. My students benefit from having tutors in my classroom, helping them as they work through writing assignments. The tutors are able to provide great feedback, and help them grow, little by little, through each writing opportunity.

The tutors, tutees, and sponsors are involved and everyone benefits by learning from one another. Great writers become even greater, and struggling writers learn how to be great. I’m just entering my second year at Chantilly, so my interactions with the CWC have been limited. However, I was able to speak to the tutors last year about my own experiences as a writing center tutor in high school and college. I was heartened by how genuine everyone seemed to be. I’m excited to see the CWC continue to benefit the Chantilly community.

I’m Mrs. Travis but most students call me Señora.  I teach Spanish; this year I’m on the Spanish 2 and 3 teams.  I love to read even though it’s often hard to find the time.  Fluffy fiction is my go-to but I love non fiction too, history and biographies in particular.  The thing that has always impressed me most about the CWC is the fact that the student leaders take full ownership of the operation.  The tutors and the board are engaged and the pride they take in supporting their fellow Chargers is inspiring.  I love seeing my current and former students leading this work.

The best aspect of the CWC is how it builds community within Chantilly. There is a sense of pride and service through the CWC. When I taught honors biology I required a visit to the CWC during the writing process. Students were not thrilled with the idea, but many of them responded after by saying how helpful it was. Many continued to use the CWC even after they moved to the next grade.
